Acer Predator 15 Gaming Laptop, Core i7, GeForce GTX 1070 Review
The Acer Predator 15 Gaming Laptop makes no attempt to hide the nature of its existence from the rest of the world, it is a gaming laptop through and through. From its aggressive styling to its Predator logo on the lid of the laptop, there can be is no doubt that the singular purpose of this unit is to provide hours of uninterrupted gaming action.
We have an RGB backlit keyboard that has a few special little details that makes it really stand out in terms of gaming functionality. The W, A, S, D keys that gamers know so well as their directional inputs in FPS titles are highlighted with an almost ruggedized grip, with red accenting on the letters as well. The same treatment has been given to the actual arrow buttons, meaning that left handed players won’t be left out in the dark, either.
Another clever feature that can be found on this unit is a physical button to disable the trackpad. This ensures that no accidental contact from a gamer’s wrist while mid game will cause any unintended movements that could negatively impact the outcome of a game. Any gamer will tell you that regardless of the build quality or design features of a laptop trackpad, they are simply not usable with today’s modern gaming titles. For this reason, an external mouse will almost always be used instead, meaning that the trackpad will not be needed for anything other than navigating the laptop under normal, non-gaming conditions.
Other gamer-centric design considerations, is the optional Cooler Master designed frost core media bay add in. This is a cooling module that slots into the bay where your optical drive would have traditionally been installed, offering superior airflow and cooling to your laptop when you need it most while gaming. Killer Doubleshot pro also gives gamers the option to combine both of their network interfaces and then delegate which application gets to use the bandwidth. Meaning that an unscheduled application update will never ruin your online gaming session ever again!
The graphical side of things has been taken care of quite nicely by a high-end NVidia GeForce GTX 1070. This powerful card features 8GB or GDDR5 and will gladly chew through any game that you place before it. The benefit here is that VR games suddenly become possible as well, meaning that as well as a portable gaming laptop you also have a mobile VR rig that you can keep on your person, inside a back pack, which will also act as a great cable management solution for your VR equipment as well.
The audio speakers are superb, and Acer has pushed the technology to new heights. The Predator SoundPound system features 2 speakers, one subwoofer and a Dolby Audio surround sound unit. All of these features come together to give a great overall gaming experience, and the Acer Predator 15 Gaming Laptop makes sure that you know what it is capable of and what it was made to do: game.
