40 Inch TV Buyer’s Guide

What should you look for in a 40 inch TV? We’ve already covered a lot of the specifics in our other review guides for TVs in different sizes, so we’ll instead focus on providing you with a smart and quick rundown of these video products for you to read.

Screen Size

We’ve included both 40 inch and 43 inch TV models on our list. Fundamentally, those three inches won’t have a big effect on your watching experience, but if you want to enjoy the largest panel, you might want to opt for a bigger model. We don’t recommend that it have a major impact when shopping for new TV sets.

Resolution

Resolution is, quite simply, how good images display on your TV. Since 4K is four times the resolution of FHD and can generally be found for affordable prices, we recommend it to most consumers. 1080p still looks great, but 4K will ensure that your TV will still be relevant in years to come. If you just want a TV for your kitchen or a spare bedroom, you can even get by with a 720p resolution.

Refresh Rate

Refresh rate tells you how quickly the screen refreshes, and it’s especially important for twitchy video games and for heavy action content like sports. The 60 Hz rate that’s common in most TVs should be appropriate for the vast majority of users, but it might be smart to upgrade to a higher rate if you’re a pro gamer.

Inputs

If you get a smart TV with apps built in, inputs probably won’t be a big deal. But if you have a video player, gaming console, or something else that you want to connect, you’ll definitely want to check the inputs available. Fortunately, most modern video devices connect with HDMI, and most modern TVs offer at least two HDMI ports. The amount of inputs will mainly be a big deal if you have an older device that uses an outdated connection method or if you have a ton of gadgets to hook up to your TV.

HDR

High dynamic range is a complement to, rather than a replacement for, the traditional resolution. A TV that offers HDR provides especially strong and bright color reproduction as well as a sharper contrast between blacks and whites. While a 4K TV is going to deliver the same amount of megapixels into the screen regardless of whether or not it has HDR, this technology will allow you to see brighter and more vibrant results that better resemble what what intended.
